On The Nature of Things
|
A wicker basket of plastic daisies adorns the pressboard commode. An artificial orange tree decorates the front hall. These are what I know of plants and flowers. I should prefer the real thing. But I like nature if it does not draw too near. I like it out there, not in here. For I am safe as long as I can put things in their proper place: cottage cheese in the refrigerator, crackers in the cupboard, second shelf, children snug in their beds by eight o'clock. Like a medieval monk, I sit and categorize in perfect scholarly control beside daisies that will never draw a bee.
