Alan Catlin - night trains: an elegy

trains are emissaries
of darkness   sealed

against seeing
almost archaic   as

troop carriers   bearers
of the condemned

the dead   inside all
lights extinguished

a smell of fear   men
in closed   tight cages

as palpable as smoke
leaking in from   some

where nearby

Alan Catlin has published over forty-five chapbooks of prose and poetry and been nominated for thirteen Pushcart Prizes. He was the winner of Main Street Rag's International Chapbook Contest in 2000 for his collection, Ghost Road. His latest volume of poetry, Drunk and Disorderly: A Selected Poems, will be released by Pavement Saw Press in 2003.
