Philip Levine is the author of numerous books of poetry, including, most recently, Unselected Poems (Greenhouse Review Press, 2000), The Mercy (Knopf, 1999), The Simple Truth (Knopf, 1994), New Selected Poems (Knopf, 1991), and What Work Is (Knopf, 1991). In 2004, Knopf will publish a new book of poems titled Breath. In addition, his poetry has appeared in hundreds of publications and journals, including Poetry, The Paris Review, Yale Review, Ploughshares, and The New Yorker. He has published two books of translations (from the Spanish), a collection of interviews, and a collection of essays. His first book of poems, On the Edge, won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award. In addition, he has been awarded The Frank O’Hara Memorial Prize and The Levenson Award (both from Poetry), the Lenore Marshall Award (for The Names of the Lost), two National Book Awards (for Ashes and What Work Is), the Ruth Lilly Award for “distinguished contributions to poetry," and the Pulitzer Prize for The Simple Truth. In 2000, he was elected as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He lives in Brooklyn, New York and Fresno, California.
